Julie’s Story

Julie After Delivery

Julie After Delivery

Julie can’t speak right now because she is still in a coma.

Julie Roberts has been my one of my closest of friends for many years now.  For those of you who do not know the issues this family has gone through recently, this is a brief re-telling of the events that have transpired in the last few months.

Her Pregnancy

Julie and her husband Wayne had been trying to to have a child for 7 years with no success.  Last August 25th, Julie found out on her 39th Birthday that she was pregnant. I was extremely happy for her, but she was admittedly nervous about the potential complications from pregnancy due to her age.

After numerous visits to the doctor during her pregnancy, Julie’s fears of  birth defects began to materialize.  Her doctors began speaking with her about birth defects and wanted to perform an amniocentesis. This procedure, though fairly common, does come with risks — including the potential loss of the child.  Julie did not want to risk losing her baby believing that even if the child did have “issues” it would always be perfect in her eyes. As her pregnancy progressed, from ultrasounds, her doctor kept telling her something was wrong with the baby’s pinky fingers and that this was a potential sign of Down’s Syndrome or dwarfism.

Early Delivery

To complicate matters further Julie was let go from her job at the end of February.  Afterwards, she began battling stress and depression.  She began to excessively worry about her unborn baby’s health, and being able to provide for her family.

She went for a routine doctors appointment March 24th and her blood pressure was  elevated.  As a result, her doctor asked that she go directly to the hospital. After further diagnosis, the doctors told her that she had preeclampsia and they needed to deliver the baby as soon as possible.

At its worst, her blood pressure had elevated to 210. The staff at Gainesville hospital were able to finally lower her blood pressure enough to induce labor.  Shortly after, they delivered a COMPLETELY HEALTHY baby girl  (Bethany Hope Roberts) — no issues whatsoever… just a little early.

Complications from Birth

I talked to Julie the next morning and told her that I would bring some “preemie” clothes to the hospital for Bethany and that her baby girl was just beautiful.

Julie explained that she hadn’t seen or held her baby yet, because baby Bethany was in the NICU.  What’s worse, Julie hadn’t even see pictures of her baby girl due to Julie’s blurred vision and inability to focus.

Before I arrived at the hospital I learned from Julie’s husband that Julie had 5 seizures, a stroke, and a brain aneurysm.

They had rushed her in to perform brain surgery and she has been in a coma ever since.

From there, things have gone from bad to awful.  While lying in a coma in recovery from her brain surgery, she still hasn’t seen or held her baby (who is now 2 weeks old).  Julie’s head has been shaved part of her skull has been removed (from surgery to relieve pressure).  Further, Julie has developed pneumonia and multiple infections

Further Setbacks

On April 7th, she underwent tracheotomy surgery so she could have the ventilator removed from her mouth.  Later that afternoon Julie coughed and the tracheotomy tube became dislodged.

Air went through where the tube was previously and caused a massive amount of oxygen to get under the tissue of her skin. Due to the amount of air, the doctors had to perform another surgery on Julie — installing tubes into her sides to remove the air from her body.  The next day Julie underwent yet another surgery to put the tracheotomy tube back in.

Just as we were starting to see some movement in her hands and feet, all of this happened.  Obviously, she is not responding like she was — this has been a HUGE setback.

Help is Needed

This family needs your prayers! In addition, I have set up a donation bank account for the family in the name Julie Roberts Assistance Fund

Julie’s husband has been back and forth between the hospital, to be with his wife, and home, to be with his newborn daughter and his daughter who Julie has been a mother to… Destiny Faith Roberts.

They have a long road ahead of them and neither will be able to work and pay their mounting bills — not to mention expenses of necessities like diapers and baby formula.

Praying and Believing in agreement for complete healing for Julie – looks like God has heard our cries for Bethany – now we must patiently await his timing for Julie’s healing. We pray for strength to endure for Wayne and the remainder of the family until the healing of Julie’s body comes forth. We also pray for Destiny to have strength to endure. God has heard our cries and now we must continue to cry out for this loving family until we see results. AIC The Scott’s Jeff and Sheila (went to high school with Sherry)

It is with sadness in our hearts to hear of Julias’ situation, our prayers are for the Holy Spirit to guide and protect her and her family. The angels to be at her bedside keeping watch over her and the blood of Jesus heels her of all sickness and bring her back to take up her position as mother and wife in her household. May God bless every soul who intercedes for Julia and her family.

My prayers have been with Julie, Wayne, Bethany and Destiny since I heard about this at church the Sunday night after her stroke. My heart goes out to the family and I will continue to lift them to the Lord, Jesus Christ. My husband had two strokes and I know the recovery is long once they come out of the coma. I am so glad to see the outpouring of love for them and thank you for this website, so we can all keep up with her progress and help.

I hate to read stories like this…such a beautiful woman to have something so ugly happen to her. My sister-in-law suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm October, 2009…two weeks after my borther went thru major back surgery. I’ve learned the most important thing right now for her is prayer, family and friends. I am glad to see that Julie has all that and more. I hope for her, there are more miracles out there for her to receive.

Wayne, Julie and Bethany: Our hearts ache for the turmoil and suffering each of you are going through. Please keep the faith that our Lord works miracles and know that we are all praying for you.

Father GOD I know that you are merciful, and all healing comes through you. If it be YOUR WILL FATHER, I ask that your HOLY SPIRIT bring about a sense of calm for this family. Let them truly feel your presence and know that you are with them, and not alone. I ask that you would forgive me of my sins that you may hear this prayer. This I PRAY in the name of JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD, AMEN.

    TO JULIE’S FAMILY:
Wayne, I don’t know you, but I want you to know my prayers have been with you when I first heard from Shane about Julie’s very critical medical issues. I knew Julie, her mom and dad, and Lisa a long time ago when the girls were growing up … when we were neighbors on Greencrest Road. I thank God for every little improvement that He is making in Julie’s body. I try to keep up with her progress from Shane who goes to church with me. Larry and Dot and Lisa … I can’t begin to know your heartache over what has happened … but please know that as well as praying for Wayne, Julie, and baby Bethany and her big sister Destiny … I am asking God’s presence in your lives. I pray that HE will comfort you with HIS love and peace and give you HIS strength in the days to come. I pray for all the families who know and love Julie, that as you stand in prayer for her … even though I may not know you personally … God knows all who are keeping watch over Julie, Wayne, Baby Bethany, and Destiny … and I thank each of you for your support of this precious family. May God bless each one of you is my prayer in the name of Jesus, my Lord and Savior!! AMEN and AMEN!! THANK YOU JESUS!!

My heart has been so burdened for this family since I read the story on my friend Kristie’s page. I know a man who walked this earth who is in the healing business. I ask everyday, several times in prayer, that He continue to touch Julie and her family. That He wrap His loving arms around them and continue to speak peace and comfort to each of them. I am believing that He will heal her in His way and His time. It is not always for us to know His plan for His people. He just asks that we seek Him and have faith. I am expecting Him to move in a powerful way on Julie’s behalf. Please know that you all are lifted in prayer daily by so many and I do believe that God hears the cries of His people.

    UPDATE ON JULIE:

They tried to get Julie out of bed on Monday to move her to a chair but her blood pressure kept going up, so they were unsuccessful on Monday.

Yesterday they DID get her up and into a chair, she kept one eye open for about 2 hours and they had her in a chair for about 4 hours. They would put a tissue in her hand and ask her to try to wipe her mouth and she could raise her arm almost to her mouth but her hand would start shaking and she just couldn’t quite make it.

Today she has been worn out from yesterday’s activities, but she is making progress.

Julie’s family and friends would like to say thank you for all of your prayers, support, donations and love that everyone has shown. We are all blessed to have such an outreach of support from friends, family and people we have never even met. THANK YOU AGAIN!

Please keep praying for Julie! God is so good!

I have heard about this traggic story over the last few weeks, and have been so touched and blessed by this story from the beginning.I have been thinking and praying that God will lift this wonderful family up in his hands and carry them through this difficult. God will continue to shower you with his love and grace, I wish the whole little family many more blessings as Julie’s recovery continues. God is good and will not disappoint you.

Our many prayers are with each family member and friend during this time. Knowing the strength that faith and prayers bring and Julie’s unbelievably determined spirit, we wish the very best outcome at the end of this trying road. We continue to pray so that Julie will be able to enjoy the many blessings in her life.

Thank you to everyone who has given us clothes, diapers, formula, wipes etc. Family and friends will be working on individual thank you’s when we get things a little bit more stable. Everyone’s prayers, love & support means so much to us all right now….THANK YOU AGAIN! I will be posting an update on Julie next.

    UPDATE ON JULIE:

I was just with Julie, and her husband (Wayne) brought their baby (Bethany) to see her at the hospital…Julie smiled at her! :)

She is opening her right eye and looking at us (following us around the room) with her right eye. She is also turning her head a little bit and wiggling her toes on command. Julie has only been at Landmark for a little over a week now, so this is great progress! Keep praying, and keep believing that God is so good! Julie’s parents were at the hospital and they finally got to see their daughter and granddaughter in the same room looking at each other for the first time.

    Update on Julie:

She is being consistent with the improvements that she has made. She opens her right eye everyday and will follow you around the room. She moves her hands and toes pretty much daily. She can follow small commands. Her CT Scan came back good yesterday. So please continue to pray!!!

I was told this story from my coworker, about her neighbor a couple of weeks ago. This morning my daughter, Hailey, and I were talking about her best friend spending the night tonight. I told her Hailey, you know Julie doesn’t like for you and Destiny to make plans and not include her and I in the process. That’s when Hailey told me Julie was still in the hospital. I thought oh dear Lord this is the woman I have been prying for and didn’t know it!

Wayne, if there is anything Robert or I can do for y’all, please let us know. We are praying for all of you! God bless all of you.

I just posted a picture update with Julie, and her husband (Wayne) he brought their baby (Bethany) to see her at the hospital… last Sunday and Julie smiled at her!

She is opening her right eye and looking at us (following us around the room) with her right eye. She is also turning her head a little bit and wiggling her toes on command.

Keep praying, and keep believing that God is so good! Julie’s parents were at the hospital and they finally got to see their daughter and granddaughter in the same room looking at each other for the first time.

I didn’t get to go to see Julie this Sunday (yesterday), because I have a cold and the last thing I want to do is give it to her.

I did keep Baby Bethany this past Thursday / Friday and she is doing great…we just want her mama to come home soon.

ANOTHER UPDATE ON JULIE: The PT spent time with Julie yesterday and she had Julie sitting in a chair for about 2 hours…and she would hold up Julie’s arm at the elbow and Julie would touch her nose with her hand….also while Julie was in bed…she would push her legs up and Julie would straighten her legs out. So…she knows what she is doing and is able to do it.

Dot and Larry (Julie’s parents) called me Saturday evening as they were leaving Julie at the hospital to let me know Julie is making really good progress. Prayers ARE being answered…Thank you God, you are an awesome God! Julie is communicating with her eye’s, she will blink one time slowly to answer “yes” and two quick blinks to answer “no”. She was squeezing Dot’s hand and doing many commands. She is working really hard and we are so proud. Thank you everyone for your continued prayers and support…please keep praying and posting. I want Julie to read all of these prayers and comments soon. I want her to know how much she is loved and needed…and to see her smile when she reads all of these.

Julie, yesterday was Mother’s Day and as I sat in church, all I could think about was you and what an awesome Mom you are. I have watched you with Destiny and always thought about what a lucky little girl to have someone like you in her life. And your wonderful husband, Wayne..What a wonderful love story the two of you have. You are so blessed, so hurry and wake up because you have so much living to do. Your family is waiting for you with so much love and opened arms. God has so much planned for the wonderful Roberts family. I plan to come to see you real soon. I will be available to do anything I can possible do. You are so beautiful and I love you very much.

  84. admin on May 11, 2010 at 3:30 am

I was so happy to see Julie today and see the wonderful progress that she is making….She is working hard! I talked her ear off and she was talking to me with yes and no blinks. I felt so bad… because when I told her that I loved her and had to go home but would be back soon…she started crying. I showed her a little thing that she gave me that said “God knew I’d need a friend, so he gave me you” and I asked her if she remembered giving that to me and she blinked “yes”.

Julie always told me that if you have a friend in your life….it is good, but if you have someone you can call for anything and you know that person will be there… you are truly blessed to have that person in your life. I am so blessed to have Julie in my life.

Keep fighting Ju Ju! I love you!!!

God tells us in his word to “TRUST IN THE LORD” with “ALL” your “HEART” lean not on you own understanding in all your ways acknowledge “HIM” and “HE will give you the “DESIRES” of your “HEART”. It has been from day one the desire of our hearts that you be “HEALED” and “WE ARE BELEIVING” that “BY GOD’S STRIPES” you “WILL” be “HEALED” and back home with your family very soon. Your mother called me last night and she was so happy that you had blew her kisses. We are so excited with all the progress that you are making keep up the “GOOD” work we know that you are a “FIGHTER”. We are seeing prayers answered everyday. God says “PRAY WITHOUT CEASING”

    UPDATE ON JULIE:

Julie is making very good progress…thank you for all of your prayers! Julie’s Mother (Dot) called me and told me that they got Julie up on her feet yesterday, and got her to her chair. She is mouthing “I love you” and blowing kisses. She is also nodding her head for “yes” and can nod a little for “no”. I got to go see her today, and they told me that they had her outside for the first time to enjoy the sunshine. I talked to her, and asked her many things and would get responses back from her. I was going over the list of things to ask her and she was answering me with nodding and blinks. She looked at me like “why are you asking me these silly things” and I told her that it was a piece of paper to ask her questions to get responses. I finally showed her the piece of paper and asked her if she could read the questions. I saw her eye’s go back and forth (like she was reading them) I asked her if she could read what was on the paper and she nodded “yes”. I told her a bunch of silly stories and she would smile. I told her that I loved her and asked her if she loved me too…and she would nod “yes”. She got tired and was trying to close her eye’s and I told her that she could take a nap and I would stay. She drifted off for a little while, but then woke up and looked at me and smiled. Julie’s Mother and I talked the other night and we know that she is aware of what is going on, her body is just tired and healing right now. She can move her arms and feet, and is progressing so much everyday. Keep praying for Julie to continue to HEAL!!!!

We are so thankful God is working in Julie and healing her. We got the opportunity to meet Julie’s mother (Dot) when Julie was in Gainesville. It meant alot to my mother to be able to talk with Dot and they shared lots of stories about how God is doing amazing work in Julie and in my step-father who was in the hospital too. Unfortunately my step-father passed away on April 16th but we know he is in a much better place. Again we continue to pray for Julie and the entire family. We know she is going to get better!!!!

I am one of the nurses from labor and delivery that had the good fortune to meet you and speak with you a few times during your stay. It broke my heart to have to transfer you to the ICU and for you to endure all you have. I have followed your amazing progress and felt compelled today as I read the latest to reply.

YOU ARE TRULY A MIRACLE. God has very special plans for us all and reminds us of HIS intentions during times such as yours.

I am THRILLED to hear of such progress especially since I saw you the day you transferred to the ICU.

May God continue to hear all prayers and guide you in your healing.

    Julie,
It has been many years since I have seen you, but I have thought of you often. I ran across Wayne and Lesa’s Facebook pages, and I even tried to get in touch with you a couple of times in February. Then this terrible thing happened. I couldn’t believe it or understand why this had to happen to you. I have prayed for you and thought of you every day. I am so happy you have fought your way through this and that you now have a sweet baby to love. You have many friends and family who love and care for you, and I hope that we can renew our friendship one day soon.
    Much love,

Julie’s Mother (Dot) called me Sunday evening and told me that Sherry (Julie’s Sister n Law) brought Bethany to see Julie Sunday afternoon. Julie wouldn’t not take her eye’s off of her beautiful baby and cried…really hard. They also got a laugh out of her at one point.

Julie is being transferred TODAY to Northeast GA. Medical Center in Gainesville to have the bone flap put back in TOMORROW. Please pray that we can get this behind us and that all goes well, so we can get Julie moved to The Shepherd Center. I will be posting updates. Thank you for your prayers!

    Julie,

I heard about what happened on Facebook and couldn’t believe it. We went to school together a long time ago:) I am praying for you everyday and can’t imagine what you and your family must have gone through. It’s great to hear that you are getting better everyday. God is great and I know has this in his hands. Keep the faith and you will be holding that beautiful baby soon I’m sure. Our prayers and thoughts are always with you.

Julie, it’s been too long since we have seen each other but know that our memories together are always close and dear to my heart. When we knew each other and hung out together almost every day, we didn’t know God as we know him now. Sure, we knew God in a basic way but neither of us really, really knew HIM. I remember looking at you and thinking “what a great person she is and how sweet she is to her niece” when I couldn’t even wrap my own thoughts around the fact that I was a single mom. But you helped me with that, you helped me realize the love that I was given unconditionally through my child and God. You helped me to see so many things that I am grateful for because you loved unconditionally The day you married Wayne and I heard about it was the greatest joy in my life – I knew what love was then – it was patient, it was kind, and it was without judgment – you taught me those things and you showed them through your actions. I still have pictures of our trip to PCB with Lynn and Yvette and I wish that I could be there for you now as you were for me through tough times. I am here in prayer, though, and I love you and I love your family, if only because you taught me how to love unconditionally.

    Julie (Jewels!) and Wayne

I just found out yesterday what happened and I am in such a state of shock–I am so sorry. I was getting worried when you did not return my call. You have a beautiful baby, but we knew you would. Destiny knew what she was doing when she picked out her name! (Boy do thoes names have meaning …FAITH & HOPE.) You now have two beautiful girls. Stay strong, keep your Faith and don’t give up, fight with everything you have. (I can tell from the updates you are already doing that.) You are a strong person and God has plans for you and your family. You will be home one day soon to raise them. I will keep you in my prayers. I hope to see you soon.

    I miss you girl!

Wayne I know you have been fantastic through all this, hang in there, you guys are in my thoughts daily!

    Love ya

    Dearest Family,
My heart just breaks for you. Please know I care, I wish I were in Gainesville to set with you and Uncle Maxie. I have been making a few little things for Bethany Hope. My mind goes back and forth to Aunt Martha, Julie, Uncle Maxie, Lisa, Larry, Wayne and etc, my prayers for each of you to have peace and rest gently in the arms of God as he heals Julie….You know you mom never mention Rebecca to me and since Brandon passed I have wondered over and over what pain she must have felt. I don’t know Dot if I told you this but Brandon was buried with the blanket you mom and dad gave him as a baby. He carried that blanket till he was around 4 years old, I kept resewing it..
That was the only item I placed in his casket.
You all were so understanding and tender with us. Uncle Maxie and Aunt Martha send me the sweetie book, that I treasure.

I pray that God will be with all of you and continue to work his miracles as he always does. Bethany is born into such a wonderful family, and soon Julie will be playing with her much wanted and loved daughter.
Your compassionate cousin, give Larry, my love. Wish it were like years ago when we would lay on the beach and just get burned and be silly…
    Praying for Julie.
    We love you all, Frankie

    UPDATE ON JULIE:

Sorry I have been slacking on the updates…we were out of town for a week and then it just got a little busy around here….I am back now!

Julie’s tracheal tube was downsized a few weeks ago, and has now been completely removed and is healing. Julie is talking (quietly) and is able to eat some soft foods when fed to her. She knows what is going on and recognizes who people are, she definitely knows her baby (Bethany) and will cry when they have to take her baby back home from visiting. Julie is making a lot of progress, but she still has some work to do before she can go to the Shepherd Center. Please keep Julie in your thoughts and prayers, so we can get her back home with her family.

Benefit dinner and concert for Julie Roberts. We will be serving a chicken dinner (chicken breast, baked beans, coleslaw, roll and dessert) and then a concert with local Christian singers/praise teams. You don’t want to miss it!

Julie Roberts gave birth to her beautiful baby girl on March 27 and the following day she had a brain aneurysm and was rushed into emergency surgery. They had to remove a portion of Julie’s skull to allow… for the swelling in her brain. She was in a full coma for 4 weeks before slightly waking. She was then transferred to Landmark Hospital in Athens where she would work with therapist on a daily basis to help her regain some range of motion in her legs and arms, and to help her begin to be more aware. She was then transferred back to Northeast Ga Medical Center to have the bone flap put back in and she suffered another seizure which caused some setbacks in her recovery. A week later she was transferred back to Landmark where she is undergoing more aggressive therapy trying to get her ready to be accepted into Shepherd Brain Clinic in Atlanta. She now has her trachea out and is able to talk a little. She has movement in all her limbs. This is going on 16 weeks now and Julie got to hold her baby for the first time last week and feed her a bottle…with some help! :-) This has been and will be a long process and the medical cost add up quickly, even with insurance. You can help. Come out and enjoy dinner and a concert while helping a good cause!

    Benefit Dinner and Concert

    Gainesville, Ga

    Julie,
I don’t know you, but read of your story on the Hamilton Mill site. I felt compelled to write to you. I truly believe that through the power of prayer, your life will be completely restored! There is no weapon that is formed against you that shall prosper. I pray that God will supernaturally touch you, and that healing will spring forth speedily. I declare in the Name of Jesus that your body and your soul be made whole by the stripes that Jesus bore on his back. There is nothing too big for God. I declare that you will live a full life and proclaim the goodness and greatness of our God!!! For everything that you have suffered, I pray that God will give you double. For every loss you and your family have suffered, I pray for complete restoration. Do not be discouraged…. what satan meant for your harm, God will take and turn for your good. He is the God of healing, salvation and restoration!!! May His spirit rise up within you with peace, healing, strength and supernatural joy where sadness, fear, anxiety and hopelessnes have been. By Jesus’ stripes, YOU ARE HEALED!!!!!!!!

    In His Love,
    Gay Ann Peterson

    Hello Julie
I am so excited to hear that you are coming home soon. I am sorry I have not been able to get to pathways to see you. I miss seeing you and laughing with you. Continue to work hard and remember God will not give you more than you can handle, keep pushing through it. The girls will be so excited to have you home, please call me when you get settled in so I can come to your house for a visit. Not sure if you still have your cell phone but I have left several messages on it hoping you would just pick up one day. :) I will continue to pray for you and Wayne and the girls. I know it’s a hard fight but Keep fighting it.

    Love you
    Cheryl

Does anyone have an update on Julie since she’s been home? Have not seen any update on her progress lately. Was going to try and call her house, not sure if I have the correct number.

Hi Julie, How are you feeling? Are you at home now? I just came accross this site and I think your friend who set this up for you is a very special friend. You are blessed to have that. I have been in tears as soon as I began reading what you have been going through. Are you fully healed? If not then you will be in Jesus Name! I want to pray for you but don’t know what exactly you or your family is in need of. Please let me know. Thanks :)
